Qatar Charity launches farming project in Gaza Strip

Qatar Charity (QC), in co-operation with the Ministry of Agriculture in the Gaza Strip, has launched a project to cultivate agricultural land in an effort to support Palestinian farmers facing tough farming conditions.

The project includes the cultivation of 7,750 acres of agricultural land allocated in the Gaza Strip, which is worth QR910,466 and will benefit 200 farmers, QC has said in a statement.

Mohamed Abu Haloub, director of the Qatar Charity office in the Gaza Strip, and Samir Mutair, chairman of the Electricity Distribution Company, signed an agreement to start implementing the first phase of the agricultural land cultivation project, which includes the provision of eight electrical transformers.

The transformers will supply 42 wells with power to irrigate more than 7,500 acres of agricultural land.

The second phase of the project will involve the operation of a well through renewable energy. It is to be implemented within two months to help pump water to irrigate more than 150 acres of land.

The second and final phase deals with the cultivation of more than 100 acres and planting fruit trees, according to QC.

Abu Halub said one of the main objectives of the project is to support farmers who are affected in the Gaza Strip and to encourage local agriculture to attain self-sufficiency as far as basic crops are concerned.

Abu Halub stressed the importance of contributing to reducing unemployment rates by providing job opportunities for farmers and those who work in the agricultural sector.

In addition, the project will help improve the rates of food security among Gazans by providing vegetables at reasonable prices.

On his part, Adel Attallah, representative of the Ministry of Agriculture, expressed happiness at Qatar’s interest in the agricultural sector in Gaza, considering the importance of the sector for people trapped under the siege for more than 11 years.

“Agriculture is an important source of employment for farmers and those who work in the agricultural sector, and it is also a major source of the Palestinian national income. We welcome the efforts of Qatar Charity and are always striving to strengthen this partnership,” Attallah said.

He noted that the importance of cultivating agricultural land, through Qatar Charity’s initiatives, lies in reducing the high cost incurred by farmers as a result of operating agricultural wells by fuel due to the lack of electrical energy sources.

Further, he said the project will help compensate farmers for the huge loss they have suffered as a result of the destruction of large areas of highly fertile agricultural land, and those who have been denied access to their land because of repeated attacks on them.

دشّن مكتب «قطر الخيرية» في قطاع غزة مشروع إعادة تأهيل أراضٍ زراعية، بالتعاون مع وزارة الزراعة بقطاع غزة، وذلك ضمن مساعيه لدعم المزارعين الفلسطينيين الذين يسكنون في المناطق المتضررة بالقطاع.

ويتضمن المشروع تأهيل 7750 دونماً من الأراضي الزراعية المخصصة للزراعة في قطاع غزة، بقيمة مالية بلغت 910,466 ريال، على أن يستفيد منه 200 مزارع متضرر.

مكونات المشروع

ووقّع كل من مدير مكتب قطر الخيرية المهندس محمد أبو حلوب، ورئيس مجلس إدارة شركة توزيع الكهرباء السيد سمير مطير، اتفاقاً للبدء في تنفيذ المكون الأول من مكونات مشروع إعادة تأهيل أراضٍ زراعية، والذي يتضمن توفير 8 محولات كهربائية من أجل تأمين الكهرباء اللازمة لتشغيل 42 بئراً لري ما يزيد عن 7500 دونم زراعي من أراضي المزارعين المتضررين.

ومن المقرر أن يجري تنفيذ المكون الثاني من مكونات المشروع، والمتعلق بتشغيل إحدى الآبار من خلال الطاقة البديلة (الشمسية)، خلال شهرين؛ وذلك للمساعدة في ضخّ المياه من أجل ري ما يزيد عن 150 دونماً زراعياً لمزارعين متضررين، فيما يتعلق المكون الثاني والنهائي بتأهيل ما يزيد عن 100 دونم زراعي وزراعتها بأشتال الشجر المثمر لمزارعين متضررين.

الأهداف

وقال المهندس أبو حلوب: إن واحداً من أبرز أهداف المشروع هو دعم ومساندة المزارعين المتضررين في قطاع غزة، وتشجيع الزراعة المحلية من أجل الوصول إلى الاكتفاء الذاتي من المحاصيل الزراعية الأساسية.

وأكد أبو حلوب أهمية المساهمة في الحدّ من البطالة، من خلال توفير فرص عمل للمزارعين والعمال في القطاع الزراعي، بالإضافة إلى تخفيف الأعباء الاقتصادية عن كاهل المواطنين من خلال توفير خضراوات بأسعار تتناسب مع وضع السكان في القطاع.

بدوره، عبّر المهندس عادل عطا الله -ممثلاً عن وزارة الزراعة- عن سعادته بحجم الاهتمام الذي توليه «قطر الخيرية» للقطاع الزراعي في غزة، على اعتبار أن الزراعة مصدر غذائي مهم للمواطنين المحاصرين منذ ما يزيد عن 11 عاماً. وقال عطا الله: «تُتبر الزراعة مصدراً مهماً لتوفير فرص عمل للمزارعين والعمال في قطاع الزراعة، كذلك تعدّ مصدراً أساسياً للدخل القومي الفلسطيني؛ ولهذا فنحن نرحّب بالجهود التي تبذلها قطر الخيرية ونسعى دوماً إلى تعزيز هذه الشراكة التي تقوم على تثبيت ركائز المزارع الفلسطيني في أرضه».

وأكد أن أهمية مشروع تأهيل أراضٍ زراعية، الذي تنفّذه «قطر الخيرية»، تنبع من كونه يخفض التكلفة العالية التي يتحملها المزارعون نتيجة تشغيل الآبار الزراعية بالوقود لعدم توافر مصادر الكهرباء.

وأشار إلى أن المشروع يساعد في تعويض المزارعين عن الخسارة الفادحة التي تكبدونها نتيجة لتجريف ساحات واسعة من الأراضي الزراعية ذات الخصوبة العالية، وحرمانهم من الوصول إلى أراضيهم بسبب الاعتداءات المتكررة عليهم.

وأوضح عطا الله أن المشروع سيساعد المزارعين على تصدير محاصيلهم للخارج بعدما حُرموا من ذلك بسبب صعوبة تسويق محاصيلهم الزراعية نتيجة عدم توافر الإمكانات، مبيناً أن الممارسات الجائرة تسببت في نقص كمية المحاصيل الزراعية في السوق المحلي وارتفاع أثمانها، غير أن المشروع سيساعد المزارع الفلسطيني بشكل كبير جداً.;
