QFFD, QC support Rohingya refugees with $8.8m aid

DOHA: Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and Qatar Charity signed yesterday an agreement worth $8.8m with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) to provide Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh with basic services.

The cooperation aims to implement a number of life-saving projects such as disaster risk reduction and response programmes in Kutupalong refugee camp, and provide basic needs and services to refugees in Bangladesh, QFFD and Qatar Charity said in a statement.

These pledges from QFFD and Qatar Charity strengthen cooperation and partnership with U.N. organizations, particularly UNHCR, the statement said, adding that it clearly demonstrates the continued humanitarian commitment of the State of Qatar and reflects the pioneering solidarity role that it has at the international level.

The agreement supports a number of projects such as reinforcing 52,000 houses before the rainy season, where about 260,000 refugees live in the Kutupalong camp, including many women and children. Around 37,500 refugees will benefit from shelter packages, in addition to protecting roads and bridges from weather factors and boosting drainage projects and directing of rainwater.

QFFD Director of Development Projects, Misfer Hamad Al Shahwani, highlighted the importance of the donation for supporting Rohingya refugees, saying that it is everyone’s responsibility to alleviate their unbearable suffering. He added that QFFD is committed to addressing the needs of refugees whether through emergency shelter or handling the challenges of health and sewage.

For his part, Khaled Khalifa, UNHCR regional representative, welcomed the “timely generous contributions” of QFFD and Qatar Charity. “The suffering of Rohingya refugees is worsening, particularly during the rainy season. This contribution will help reduce these risks,” Khalifa said.

In the same regard, Mohammed Ali Al Ghamdi, Qatar Charity’s executive director of international development department, said it is important for the men, women and children in question to enjoy the things that they missed out on and to have the appropriate conditions to recover and rebuild their lives.

Al Ghamdi added that Qatar Charity is looking forward to continuing the effective work with UNHCR in Bangladesh and around the world.

The partnership between QFFD, Qatar Charity and UNHCR was previously announced on the sidelines of the Aid and Trade London conference and exhibition in April.

More than 80,000 Rohingya Muslim refugees fled their homes in Rakhine State in Myanmar on the border with Bangladesh in August following an extermination campaign by Myanmar authorities that was condemned by the United Nations.

وقّع صندوق قطر للتنمية و»قطر الخيرية» والمفوضية السامية لشؤون اللاجئين على اتفاق تعاون ثلاثي، يتعهد فيه كل من صندوق قطر للتنمية و»قطر الخيرية» بتقديم دعم مالي للمفوضية السامية لشؤون اللاجئين، بقيمة 8.8 مليون دولار، من أجل توفير خدمات أساسية للاجئين الروهينجا في بنجلاديش.

تم توقيع الاتفاقية في الدوحة، بحضور سعادة السيد خليفة الكواري، مدير عام صندوق قطر للتنمية، وسعادة السيد يوسف الكواري الرئيس التنفيذي لقطر الخيرية، والسيد خالد خليفة، الممثل الإقليمي للمفوضية في دول مجلس التعاون الخليجي. وقد أبرمت هذه الاتفاقية قبل حلول الأمطار الموسمية، لتوفير مشاريع منقذة للحياة، مثل برامج الحد من مخاطر الكوارث والاستجابة في مخيم كوتوبالونغ، والاحتياجات والخدمات الأساسية للاجئين في بنجلاديش.

كما تأتي هذه التعهدات من صندوق قطر للتنمية وقطر الخيرية لتعزيز التعاون والشراكة مع منظمات الأمم المتحدة، وبالأخص المفوضية السامية لشؤون اللاجئين (UNHCR).

ويوضح الاتفاق عدداً من المشاريع، مثل تدعيم 52.000 منزل قبل موسم الأمطار، حيث يقيم حوالي 260.000 لاجئ، من بينهم الكثير من النساء والأطفال، في مخيم كوتوبالونغ. كما سيستفيد ما يقارب 37.500 لاجئ من حزم الإيواء، بالإضافة إلى وقاية الطرق والجسور من عوامل الطقس، وتعزيز مشاريع الصرف، وتوجيه مياه الأمطار.

«وقال السيد خالد خليفة، الممثل الإقليمي للمفوضية في دول مجلس التعاون الخليجي: ترحب المفوضية بالمساهمات الكريمة التي أتت في الوقت المناسب من صندوق قطر للتنمية وقطر الخيرية».

وأضاف: «إن معاناة اللاجئين الروهينجا تتفاقم، خاصة أثناء موسم الأمطار.

وأكد السيد محمد علي الغامدي، المدير التنفيذي للإدارة التنفيذية للتعاون الدولي بقطر الخيرية، أهمية أن تتاح الظروف التي تساعد المتضررين على التعافي وإعادة بناء حياتهم.;
