QNL officially opens as Emir places rare 843-year-old manuscript copy

DOHA: Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani inaugurated the Qatar National Library (QNL), a member of Qatar Foundation (QF), yesterday and placed the one millionth book at the facility.

Father Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of QF, also graced the inauguration ceremony.

The Emir signed the official inauguration certificate of QNL which marked the library’s official inauguration and he placed the library’s one millionth book, a rare 843-year-old manuscript copy of Sahih Al Bukhari.

With the official inauguration QNL became the first new national library to open anywhere in the world in this millennium.

The ceremony was also attended by the Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers of Oman H H Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmoud Al Said, Assistant Prime Minister of Turkey Bakir Buzdag, Sheikh Ali Jarrah Al Sabah, Kuwaiti Minister of Emiri Diwan Affairs and Envoy of the Emir of Kuwait H H Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah, and Princess Lalla Hasna, representative of King Mohammed VI of Morocco.

The inauguration was also attended by the former President of Turkey, Abdullah Gul; former President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy; former President of Kosovo, Atifa Yahya Agha; and former Prime Minister of Italian Republic, Matteo Renzi, and several other dignitaries, politicians, diplomats and other guests representing 52 countries.

“The inauguration of Qatar National Library invokes a great sense of historical pride and belonging to the Arab world, which pioneered writing, transcription, and libraries in Mesopotamia 5,000 years ago. The idea of the National Library was inspired by this glorious history, in hopes of restoring an Arab renaissance that we do not want to lose.

“The library was established to be a treasury of written history and a medium for the transfer of knowledge between different cultures,” said Sheikha Moza addressing the guests.

“Essentially, it will be an institution of reference for Arabic and Islamic heritage and a platform for spreading contemporary intellectual and literary thought. QNL is designed in form and content to be three-dimensional: A national library, a public library, and a research library in one.”

“As an advanced digital library, it will allow users immediate access to accurate information. It will provide new generations with the necessary, intellectual tools to read and interpret history correctly,” said Sheikha Moza.

“The National Library would not have reached these distinguished heights as a monument of knowledge without the unwavering vision of the country’s leadership. From the reign of the father to the son, supporting sustainable and strategic development projects, particularly in human development,” she added.

The QNL has been five years in the planning, having been founded in 2012 by Sheikha Moza and she placed the first book on the shelves of the library in December, 2016.

Following the inauguration, poet Tamim Al Barghouti spoke on ‘It is still possible’, and light infused travel through past, present and future of Qatar was featured under the theme ‘A Nation Guided by Knowledge.’

While, renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas who designed the QNL spoke on ‘The architecture of cultural institutions.’ Roly Keating, CEO of the British Library and Nicholas Negroponte, co-founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab also addressed the guests.

“Qatar National Library seeks to be a centre of learning not only in Qatar but also internationally. This grand opening, which welcomed more than 700 visitors from Qatar and around the world, demonstrates the continued global importance of libraries in everyday life,” said Dr Wastawy, Executive Director, QNL.

QNL opened its doors to the public in November, 2017 for an experimental period and has welcomed more than 200,000 visitors during the five months. The library’s collection includes books in 20 languages including English and Arabic, and has a dedicated Children’s Library and Young Adults collection.

The QNL’s Heritage Library collection includes rare and valuable items related to Arab and Islamic civilisation.

To mark the inauguration, QNL will host a series of public lectures, exhibitions and other events including the inaugural Heritage Library exhibition.

تفضل حضرة صاحب السمو الشيخ تميم بن حمد آل ثاني أمير البلاد المفدى، فشمل برعايته الكريمة حفل افتتاح مكتبة قطر الوطنية، وذلك في مؤسسة قطر للتربية والعلوم وتنمية المجتمع، مساء أمس. حضر الحفل صاحب السمو الأمير الوالد الشيخ حمد بن خليفة آل ثاني، وصاحبة السمو الشيخة موزا بنت ناصر، رئيس مجلس إدارة مؤسسة قطر للتربية والعلوم وتنمية المجتمع.

كما حضر حفل الافتتاح معالي الشيخ عبدالله بن ناصر بن خليفة آل ثاني رئيس مجلس الوزراء وزير الداخلية، وصاحب السمو السيد فهد بن محمود آل سعيد نائب رئيس الوزراء لشؤون مجلس الوزراء بسلطنة عمان الشقيقة، وسعادة السيد بكير بوزداغ مساعد رئيس الوزراء التركي، ومعالي الشيخ علي جراح الصباح وزير شؤون الديوان الأميري، ممثل صاحب السمو الشيخ صباح الأحمد الجابر الصباح أمير دولة الكويت الشقيقة، وصاحبة السمو الملكي الأميرة للا حسناء ممثلة جلالة الملك محمد السادس ملك المملكة المغربية الشقيقة.

كما حضر الحفل فخامة السيد عبدالله غول، رئيس الجمهورية التركية السابق، وفخامة السيد نيكولا ساركوزي، رئيس الجمهورية الفرنسية الأسبق، والسيدة عاطفة يحيى أغا، الرئيسة السابقة لجمهورية كوسوفو، ودولة السيد ماتيو رينزي، رئيس وزراء الجمهورية الإيطالية السابق.

كما حضر عدد من أصحاب السعادة الشيوخ والوزراء، ورؤساء البعثات الدبلوماسية المعتمدين لدى الدولة، وضيوف الحفل.

وبعد ذلك وقع حضرة صاحب السمو الشيخ تميم بن حمد آل ثاني أمير البلاد المفدى على الشهادة الرسمية لمكتبة قطر الوطنية، والتي تعلن عن افتتاحها رسمياً، ووضع سموه الكتاب رقم «مليون» على أحد رفوف المكتبة، وهو نسخة نادرة من مخطوط لكتاب صحيح البخاري عمره أكثر من 843 عاماً.

وبعد انتهاء الحفل قام سمو الأمير المفدى وصاحبة السمو الشيخة موزا بنت ناصر، وكل من صاحب السمو السيد فهد بن محمود آل سعيد نائب رئيس الوزراء لشؤون مجلس الوزراء بسلطنة عمان الشقيقة، وصاحبة السمو الملكي الأميرة للا حسناء ممثلة جلالة الملك محمد السادس ملك المملكة المغربية الشقيقة، بجولة في المكتبة التراثية، حيث تم الاطلاع على ما تحتويه من مخطوطات نادرة شاهدة على العصر الذهبي للحضارة العربية والإسلامية في الطب، والرياضيات، والفلك، والهندسة، وغيرها من العلوم التي يزيد عدد مقتنياتها عن 50 ألف مادة، تشمل مخطوطات، ووثائق تاريخية، بالإضافة إلى الكتب القديمة من بدايات عصر الطباعة، والخرائط التاريخية، والصور الفوتوغرافية القديمة، والآلات الملاحية والفلكية القديمة.;
