Qatari composer Dana Alfardan’s musical to debut at world renowned Beiteddine Palace in Lebanon

*Renowned composer’s Broken Wings, based on a Kahlil Gibran novel, debuts in the region
Critically-acclaimed Qatari musician, composer, songwriter and symphonic artist Dana Alfardan has co-written the musical, Broken Wings, based on the novel by Kahlil Gibran, with Nadim Naaman.
The musical will debut today in the region as part of the 35th anniversary of the prestigious Beiteddine Festival, one of the leading arts festivals in the Middle East, that concludes on Friday.
Based in Lebanon, the Beiteddine Festival is home to both Kahlil Gibran and Nadim Naaman and takes place within the grounds of the magnificent 19th Century Beiteddine Palace, a hotspot for tourists in The Chouf Mountains, less than an hour’s drive from Beirut.
The West-End production, which itself is a piece of Gibran’s life, talks about love, family and duty in the 20th Century Lebanon.
The events in Broken Wings highlight key social issues of the time: the fight for gender equality, tradition versus modernity, wealth versus happiness, immigration and the importance of ‘home’; themes that becoming are increasingly relevant today, over a century later.
Dana, who wrote the music and lyrics for the musical, said: “After the work we have done in London, the show’s creative home, it will be a huge moment for us, to take Gibran back to his homeland this summer, and to the people who know him best.”
Drawing on her cultural heritage, and influenced by a love of world music, Dana’s work is Arab-influenced, contemporary classical in style – which she brings to the musical.
Nadim Naaman, the co-writer, added: “We have never stopped working to refine and improve this material. Now we are ready to take Broken Wings to the people who care for Gibran more than anyone — the Lebanese.”
“I’m especially proud because of my Lebanese heritage, and what this project means to fans of both Gibran and theatre in the Middle East as a whole,” Naaman added.
Broken Wings acclaimed West End cast is led by co-writer Naaman as Gibran, Nikita Johal (Spring Awakening) as Selma and Benjamin Purkiss (Bat Out of Hell) as Gibran’s teenage-self.
The cast is completed by Adam Linstead (Fiddler on The Roof) as Farris, Soophia Foroughi (Spamalot) as Mother, Nadeem Crowe (School of Rock) as Karim, Karl Seth (Bend it Like Beckham) as Bishop Bulos Galib, Sami Lamine (Laila: The Musical) as Mansour Bey Galib, Bethany Weaver (Oklahoma!) as Leila, Robert Hannouch (Don’t Look Away) as Ensemble, Jake Stewart as Dance Captain/Ensemble and Hannah Qureshi as Ensemble.
Produced by Ali Matar (AM Management and Productions), Broken Wings is directed by Bronagh Lagan and features orchestrations and musical direction by Joe Davison.

أعلنت الفنانة القطرية دانة الفردان عن مشاركتها في مهرجانات بيت الدين 2019 في لبنان، وذلك من خلال عملها «الأجنحة المتكسرة»، المسرحية الموسيقية المقتبسة من رواية خليل جبران التي تحمل الاسم نفسه. وقامت دانة الفردان بتأليف «الأجنحة المتكسرة» بالتعاون مع الفنان نديم نعمان. وستُعرض الأجنحة المتكسرة في المهرجان أيام 24 و25 و26 يوليو الحالي، لتُشكل هذه المشاركة الانطلاقة الأولى لهذا العمل المسرحي والموسيقي في المنطقة، بالتزامن مع الاحتفال بمرور 35 سنة على إطلاق مهرجانات بيت الدين الشهيرة على مستوى العالم العربي.
تُعتبر مهرجانات بيت الدين واحدة من أبرز المهرجانات الثقافية التي تقام في لبنان، مسقط رأس كل من خليل جبران ونديم نعمان، وتجري فعاليات المهرجان في قصر بيت الدين التاريخي، إحدى الوجهات السياحية والثقافية البارزة في قلب جبل الشوف على مقربة من العاصمة بيروت.
وتروي المسرحية الموسيقية التي تم إنتاجها في وست أند بلندن فصولاً من حياة خليل جبران، وتتطرق لمواضيع الحب والعائلة في لبنان في فترة بداية القرن العشرين. وتتناول قصص «الأجنحة المتكسرة» قضايا اجتماعية عرفها مجتمع جبران في تلك الفترة، منها الصراع من أجل المساواة بين الجنسين، والتقاليد في مواجهة المعاصرة، والثروة في مقابل السعادة، إلى جانب الهجرة والوطن، وهي المواضيع التي أصبحت راهنة بعد مرور ما يُناهز القرن من تأليف جبران للأجنحة المتكسرة.
وقالت دانة الفردان تعليقاً على مشاركتها في مهرجانات بيت الدين بلبنان: «كانت مشاركتنا في لندن مع إطلاق المسرحية الموسيقية للمرة الأولى بغاية الأهمية، إلا أن هذه المشاركة هي اللحظة الكبرى بالنسبة لنا خاصة مع عرض عملنا في مسقط رأس خليل جبران وأمام الجمهور الذي يعرف جبران جيداً». هذا وتتميز المسرحية الموسيقية باللمسات الموسيقية المستوحاة من الثقافة العربية، والتي وضعتها دانة الفردان لتعكس حبها للموسيقى التي تجمع بين الفن الكلاسيكي والمعاصر.
من جانبه قال نديم نعمان، المشارك في تأليف المسرحية الموسيقية: «لم نتوقف عن العمل على تطوير المسرحية الموسيقية، ونحن الآن مستعدون لعرض عملنا أمام الجمهور الذي عاش تجارب مشابهة لما عاشه جبران، وأمام كل محبيه في منطقة الشرق الأوسط».
ويضم فريق الممثلين في المسرحية الموسيقية من نجوم وست إند في لندن كلاً من نديم نعمان في دور جبران، ونيكيتا جوهال في دور سلمى، وبنيامين بوركيس في دور جبران اليافع. وتشمل بقية الممثلين كلاً من آدم لينستد في دور فارس، وصوفيا فوروغي في دور الأم، ونديم كروي في دور كريم، وكارل سيث في دور المطران بولس غالب، إضافة إلى كل من سامي الأمين في دور منصور بك غالب، وبيثني ويفر في دور ليلى، وروبرت هانوش وهانا قرشي في المجموعة الموسيقية، إلى جانب جايك ستيورت في المجموعة الموسيقية وأداء الرقص. تم إنتاج الأجنحة المتكسرة من طرف علي مطر (أي إم للإدارة والإنتاج)، وهي من إخراج برونا لاغان، في حين قام الموسيقار جو ديفيدسون بقيادة الأوركسترا والإخراج الموسيقي للمسرحية.
