QRCS initiates $4mn health operations in Gaza

Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has started a series of health projects in Gaza, including life-saving medical interventions, supplies and capacity-building, which will “ultimately translate into high-quality services for the population”. “With the new $4mn plan, there will be an opportunity to improve the poor humanitarian conditions in Gaza following 13 years of blockade,” QRCS has said in a statement. 

Since 2010, QRCS has implemented over 90 humanitarian projects there, totalling $110mn in value. “Currently, 11 medical projects are in progress,” said Dr Akram Nassar, director of QRCS’s representation office in Gaza. “These include the enhancement of specialised surgical, dialysis and chemotherapy services, as well as the development of Al-Amal Hospital.”

The aim of these projects is to back the health sector, which has recently been subject to pressures of limited financial resources and lack of medical supplies. 

“We are putting $4mn funding in this, based on an assessment of the most critical healthcare needs, to make things a little bit better in Gaza,” he explained.

Building upon QRCS’s medical expertise contracting programme being implemented since 2010, the specialised surgery support project involves hiring consultants in key specialisations such as cardiothoracic surgery, urology, anaesthesia, vascular surgery and oncology.  

With these medical services made available, there will be a reduced need for the patients to travel abroad for treatment. Another aspect of the project is building the capacity of local medical professionals, who will be supervised and guided by the senior physicians hired. 

Also, they will benefit from in-house training programmes on clinical pharmacy, advanced minimally invasive surgery, MSc in Health Care Management, Diploma in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, and treatment of children with phenylketonuria. The overall budget of this project amounts to $1.4mn.

“The second project on the list is designed to support dialysis services,” Dr Nassar added. “Special attention is paid to the patients with kidney failure, in an attempt to relieve their pain and save their lives through kidney transplantations. At a total cost of $486,000, we will procure 10 medical equipment and related drugs and dialysate solutions for the benefit of 816 patients, 36 of whom are kids.”

Dr Mohamed Abo Nada, director of the Abdel-Aziz Rantisi Specialist Hospital, talked about support for the patients with cancer in Gaza. “With support from QRCS, chemotherapy medicines will be provided for women with breast cancer and children with cancer. 

These supplies will solve the shortage in such medicines, which is detrimental to the lives of those patients.”

Under the new project, cancer medicines will be secured for 8,800 patients for 10 months at a cost of $888,000. In line with the strategic plan of Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) to upgrade health facilities in Gaza, QRCS will develop the surgical services at Al-Amal Hospital, with a budget of $486,000.

According to Dr Wael Makki, the hospital’s director, two operating rooms have been totally renovated and furnished in order to reduce the surgical waiting list at the hospital, where 200 operations are performed per month.

بدأ الهلال الأحمر القطري تنفيذ مجموعة جديدة من المشاريع الصحية في قطاع غزة، تتضمن تدخلات طبية نوعية لإنقاذ أرواح المرضى الذين يعانون من ظروف صحية وإنسانية صعبة، بالإضافة إلى توريد الأدوية والمستلزمات الطبية اللازمة للمستشفيات، والمساهمة في بناء قدرات الطواقم الطبية المحلية من أجل تقديم خدمات عالية الجودة للسكان. تبلغ الميزانية المخصصة لهذه المشاريع الحيوية 4 ملايين دولار، وهي تمثل فرصة لتحسين الظروف الإنسانية في غزة جراء الحصار والإغلاق المفروض على القطاع طوال 13 عاماً، تخلّلها تنفيذ الهلال الأحمر القطري لما يزيد عن 90 مشروعاً إنسانياً منذ عام 2010، بتكلفة إجمالية تجاوزت 110 ملايين دولار.

وحول أبرز المشاريع الصحية الجاري تنفيذها، أشار د. أكرم نصار مدير مكتب الهلال الأحمر القطري في قطاع غزة، إلى أنه يتم حالياً تنفيذ 11 مشروعاً جديداً تخدم تخصصات طبية مختلفة، ومنها مشروع دعم الخدمات الجراحية التخصصية، ودعم خدمات غسيل الكلى، وتوفير خدمات العلاج الكيميائي لمرضى السرطان، وتطوير الخدمات الجراحية بمستشفى الأمل.

وأكد د. نصار أن هذه المشاريع ستساهم في تعزيز النظام الصحي، الذي بات يعاني من ضعف الإمكانيات وقلة الموارد الصحية خلال السنوات الأخيرة، وأن هذه المشاريع الجديدة بميزانية إجمالية 4 ملايين دولار.

ويعد مشروع دعم الجراحات التخصصية استمراراً لبرنامج استقدام الخبرات الطبية والتدريب الذي يدعمه الهلال الأحمر القطري في قطاع غزة منذ عام 2010، ويتضمن المشروع التعاقد مع مجموعة من الاستشاريين في تخصصات طبية مهمة كجراحات القلب والصدر والمسالك البولية والتخدير والدم والأورام، مما يعزّز قدرات النظام الصحي على تقديم هذه الخدمات الطبية، وبالتالي تقليص الحاجة لتحويل المرضى للعلاج بالخارج.

وبالإضافة إلى ذلك، فإن هذا المشروع يساهم في بناء قدرات الكوادر الطبية المحلية من خلال عملهم تحت إشراف وتوجيه الاستشاريين داخل المستشفيات، إلى جانب استفادتهم من برامج تدريبية محلية في الصيدلة السريرية وتدريبات متقدمة في جراحة المناظير (MIS)، ودعم برنامج ماجستير الإدارة الصحية وبرنامج دبلوم التخدير والعناية المركزة، ودعم مرضى الفينيل كيتون يوريا. ويبلغ إجمالي تمويل هذا المشروع 1.4 دولار.

أما بخصوص مشروع دعم خدمات غسيل الكلى، فيوضح د. نصار أن الهلال الأحمر القطري يولي اهتماماً كبيراً للتخفيف عن هذه الفئة من المرضى والمساهمة في إنقاذ حياتهم، من خلال دعم برنامج زراعة الكلى وتوفير التدخلات المخبرية اللازمة، ليضاف إلى مشاريع سابقة عملت على زيادة عدد أجهزة غسيل الكلى لدى وزارة الصحة الفلسطينية، لافتاً إلى أن المشروع الجديد يتضمن توفير 10 أجهزة حديثة، إلى جانب الأدوية والمستهلكات اللازمة لتشغيلها، بتكلفة إجمالية تبلغ 486,000 دولار، مما سيساعد على استمرارية تقديم هذه الخدمات لفائدة 816 مريض فشل كلوي منهم 36 طفلاً.

وحول دعم مرضى السرطان في قطاع غزة، يؤكد مدير مستشفى عبدالعزيز الرنتيسي التخصصي د. محمد أبو ندى، أن المشروع سيوفر أدوية العلاج الكيميائي لمريضات سرطان الثدي وأطفال السرطان، في ظل استمرار النقص الحاد لغالبية الأدوية المطلوبة لعلاج هؤلاء المرضى، مما يشكل خطراً داهماً على حياتهم، حيث إن توافر جرعات كاملة من مجموعات الأدوية التي يجب أن يتناولها مريض السرطان يعتبر شرطاً أساسياً في تقدم عملية شفائه، موضحاً أن المشروع الجديد للهلال الأحمر القطري سيُفيد 8,800 مريض ومريضة على مدار 10 أشهر، سيتم خلالها شراء وتوريد الأدوية اللازمة لعلاج السرطان بتكلفة قدرها 888,000 دولار.
