Sydney: Australian researchers are working on a 15-minute test to detect Coronavirus using baking yeast as a key ingredient. The Queensland government has granted biotechnology company Xing Technologies funding of A$1.5 million (US$1.07 million) to spend on the project, which researchers said yesterday was working in a similar way to pregnancy test. The lead researcher « Yadveer Grewal » said that a few drops of a special solution are placed on the nose swab and then the test can be applied to the bar, and then the result comes out within 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the severity of the infection.
He explained that yeast contains molecules that can trap the virus, stressing that «other tests in the market are excellent, but they do not distinguish between living and dead virus» “Our test will be a low-cost test that can be used next to the bed, so we used tape technology, which is often used in pregnancy test strips.” This cheap quick test can be used when entering high-risk areas such as hospitals, aged care facilities and shopping centres.
