Doha: Qatar National Library’s photography exhibition, “Between Science and Art: Early Photography in the Middle East,” opened to the public on 20 September with a brief ceremony. His Excellency Dr. Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Al-Kawari, Minister of State, Qatar and President of Qatar National Library, inaugurated the exhibition in the presence of HE Ambassador of the French Republic to the State of Qatar Jean-Baptiste Faivre.

The exhibition focuses on stories of the first practitioners of photography and will include some of the earliest and most rare images of the Middle East, captured by renowned photographers during the early years of the medium. The Heritage Library will display objects from both Qatar National Library and Qatar Museums collections, such as the works by pioneer French photographer Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey (1804 1892) and the “Giroux Daguerreotype,” a rare example of the first commercially produced cameras.

On the occasion, HE Minister of State and President of the Qatar National Library Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari, said, “We are pleased to open the photography exhibition in the presence of HE the French Ambassador and representatives from Qatar Museums, who played a major role by lending some of the oldest daguerreotype photographs and cameras on display. We are thankful to Qatar Museums for helping us enrich the exhibition and we are confident that this fruitful collaboration will continue in future projects as well.”

HE Dr. Al Kawari further stressed, “The exhibition pays tribute to the contributions of Muslim scholars like Hassan bin Al Haytham, who played a key role in the invention of the modern camera. Furthermore, our Heritage Library’s vision goes beyond preserving Arab history. It is also committed to providing easy access and knowledge to intellectuals, scholars, institutions and individuals, making our heritage a catalyst for creativity. We believe that the scientific achievements in the world reflect the human mind and our exhibition is in line with our belief, resulting in an amalgamation of cultures that help promote the progress of humankind. As a guardian of the nation’s and region’s heritage, we believe the photography exhibition will be an ideal opportunity for visitors to learn about Arab history and embark on a journey to the past”.

The exhibition describes the material dimension of photography-from the daguerreotype process to some of the first printing techniques and their commercial implications, as well as photography’s effect on the construction of “the Orient” and the intellectual debate the new invention brought to the Arab world. Visitors will learn about the journey of the camera obscura between the 5th century BCE and 19th century CE, Arab contributions to photography, and the first daguerreotypists in the Middle East.

Qatar National Library is the nation’s prime institution of reference for Arabic and Islamic heritage and civilization, and its Heritage Library provides a rich collection of valuable historical texts, manuscripts and rare items, which can be accessed by researchers, historians and the general public.

The temporary exhibition will be available for viewing in the Heritage Library area until 30 December 2021. Visitors can book their exhibition visit by registering through this link. The Library will continue to implement its COVID-19 safety measures to provide a safe and sanitized environment for visitors. During the three-month exhibition, the Library will also be hosting small-scale virtual sessions related to photography.

الدوحة: دشنت مكتبة قطر الوطنية، اليوم، معرض /بين العلم والفن: بدايات التصوير الفوتوغرافي في الشرق الأوسط/، بإقامة حفل افتتاح حضره سعادة الدكتور حمد بن عبدالعزيز الكواري وزير الدولة ورئيس مكتبة قطر الوطنية، وبمشاركة سعادة السيد جان باتيست فافر سفير الجمهورية الفرنسية لدى الدولة.

ويركز المعرض على قصص الممارسين الأوائل للتصوير الفوتوغرافي، عبر تقديم مجموعة من أقدم الصور الملتقطة في الشرق الأوسط، التي أصبحت مثالاً لبدايات التصوير الفوتوغرافي منذ العقود التي تلت الإعلان عن اكتشاف التصوير في عام 1839، كما يُسلط المعرض الضوء على مجموعة من أقدم وأندر الصور التي التقطها أشهر المصورين خلال السنوات الأولى بعد اختراع الكاميرا.

ويتضمن المعرض مقتنيات من مجموعات مكتبة قطر الوطنية ومتاحف قطر، مثل أعمال المصور الفرنسي الرائد جوزيف فيليبرت جيرولت دي برانجي /1804-1892/ والكاميرات من طراز /Giroux Daguerréotype/، وهي مثال نادر للكاميرات التجارية الأولى.

وبهذه المناسبة، صرح سعادة الدكتور حمد بن عبدالعزيز الكواري وزير الدولة ورئيس مكتبة قطر الوطنية، قائلاً: “نحن سعداء بافتتاح معرض التصوير الفوتوغرافي وبحضور سعادة السفير الفرنسي ونخبة من كبار المديرين في هيئة متاحف قطر، التي ساهمت بدور كبير في إقامة المعرض بإعارة العديد من المواد المعروضة مثل الكاميرات القديمة والصور الأصلية المطبوعة بعملية التصوير الداجيري، نشكر متاحف قطر على مساعدتنا في إثراء المعرض، ونثق في أن روح التعاون الطيبة هذه ستتجلى مرة أخرى في مشروعات ثقافية أخرى مشتركة في المستقبل”.

وأضاف سعادة الدكتور الكواري قائلًا: “يهدي المعرض رسالة تحية وإجلال لإسهامات العلماء المسلمين مثل الحسن بن الهيثم في البصريات التي كان لها دور أساسي في اختراع الكاميرا الحديثة. كما يجسد المعرض رؤية المكتبة التراثية التي لا تقتصر على حفظ التراث وصونه فحسب، بل تهدف أيضًا لأن يكون هذا التراث متاحًا وفي متناول الجميع من المثقفين والدارسين والمؤسسات والأفراد، من أجل تحفيزهم على الإبداع”.

وأشار سعادته إلى أن الإنجازات العلمية التي تحققت في العالم هي إنجازات للعقل الإنساني وللحضارة الإنسانية ككل، “ومعرضنا اليوم نموذج لمثل هذا العمل المشترك، ونتيجة لتعاون الثقافات الذي يؤدي إلى التقدم للأمام وتكون النتيجة لصالح الإنسان. ونحن كمكتبة وطنية تحمل على عاتقها مسؤولية المحافظة على تراث المنطقة والأمة، لدينا قناعة بأن معرض التصوير الفوتوغرافي سيكون فرصة مثالية للزائرين لمعرفة المزيد عن تاريخ المنطقة العربية عبر صور نادرة تصحبهم في رحلة إلى الماضي”.

ويصف المعرض التأثير المادي للتصوير الفوتوغرافي ابتداء من عملية التصوير الداجيري إلى تقنيات الطباعة الأولى ودلالاتها التجارية، وكذلك تأثير التصوير الفوتوغرافي على بناء صورة /الشرق/ من منظور الحضارة الغربية، والجدل الفكري الذي أثاره اختراع كاميرات التصوير في العالم العربي.

وسيتعرف الزائرون على رحلة تطور الكاميرا ابتداءً من الحجرة المظلمة وصولاً إلى القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي، وإسهامات العلماء العرب والمسلمين في اختراع التصوير، وعلى أوائل المصورين بتقنية التصوير الداجيري في الشرق الأوسط.

يشار إلى أن مكتبة قطر الوطنية هي إحدى أهم المؤسسات المرجعية في قطر للتراث والحضارتين العربية والإسلامية، وتحتوي المكتبة التراثية على مجموعة فريدة وزاخرة من النصوص التاريخية والمخطوطات والمواد النادرة، وهي متاحة لاطلاع الباحثين والمؤرخين والجمهور العام.

وسيظل المعرض مفتوحا للزيارة في منطقة المكتبة التراثية حتى 30 ديسمبر من العام الجاري، حيث ستنظم المكتبة جلسات افتراضية وفعاليات مرتبطة بالتصوير الفوتوغرافي طوال هذه الفترة، كما ستواصل المكتبة تطبيق التدابير الاحترازية للحد من انتشار جائحة فيروس كورونا /كوفيد-19/ من أجل توفير بيئة آمنة وسالمة للزائرين.
