100 million children lack minimum reading skills due to Covid-19

Paris: More than 100 million children worldwide will not meet the minimum reading skills due to the closures imposed by the Corona(Covid-19) pandemic on educational institutions, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has revealed.

In a study on the impact of the pandemic on the study of children, the organization said that the number of children without basic reading skills was deteriorating before the closures imposed by Corona, noting that it had expected the number of children having reading problems to decline from 483 million to about 460 million in 2020, but the pandemic led to numbers which varied from the expectations with 584 million last year, 20 percent rise from previous numbers.

These increasing numbers of students with reading skills difficulties had dispelled the progress made in education efforts across the world over the past two decades.

The UNESCO study also concluded that a return to normalcy, as it had been before the pandemic, could take a decade, but noted that this recovery could be achieved by 2024 “if extraordinary efforts are made to provide compensatory lessons and remedial strategies for students.”

باريس: كشفت منظمة الأمم المتحدة للتربية والعلم والثقافة /اليونسكو/ أن أكثر من 100 مليون طفل في العالم لن يستوفوا الحد الأدنى من مهارات القراءة بسبب الإغلاقات التي فرضتها جائحة كورونا /كوفيد-19/ على المؤسسات التربوية.

وذكرت المنظمة، في دراسة أنجزتها بشأن تداعيات الجائحة على دراسة الأطفال، أن عدد الأطفال الذين يفتقرون إلى مهارات القراءة الأساسية كان في تدهور قبل الاغلاقات التي فرضتها /كورونا/، لافتة إلى أنها كانت تتوقع انخفاض عدد الأطفال الذين يواجهون مشاكل في القراءة من 483 مليون طالب إلى نحو 460 مليونا خلال عام 2020، إلا أن الجائحة جاءت بخلاف هذه التوقعات، حيث ارتفع عددهم ليصل إلى 584 مليون طفل خلال العام الماضي، بزيادة تقارب 20 % عن الأعداد السابقة.

وأكدت أن هذه الأعداد المتزايدة في صفوف الطلاب الذين يواجهون صعوبات في مهارات القراءة بددت التقدم الذي أحرزته الجهود المبذولة في قطاع التعليم عبر العالم على مدى العقدين الماضيين.

كما خلصت دراسة /اليونسكو/ إلى أن عودة الحياة إلى طبيعتها، كما كانت قبل تفشي الجائحة، قد تستغرق عقدا من الزمن، لكنها لفتت إلى أن هذا التعافي قد يتحقق بحلول عام 2024 “إذا بذلت جهود استثنائية لتوفير دروس تعويضية وإستراتيجيات استدراكية لفائدة الطلاب”.
