Qatar Fund for Development Provides Urgent Aid to UNRWA

Doha: Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) signed an emergency contribution agreement to support the regular resources of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which will help respond to the Palestine refugees chronic needs and support the efforts of UNRWA.
UNRWA has been undergoing chronic underfunding that threatens its ability to pay staff salaries, adding to the distress and despair of Palestine refugees as they face some of the worst socio-economic conditions in years. These additional resources will immediately bridge an acute funding gap and allow the continuation of critical services to Palestine refugees across the region.
HE QFFD Director General Khalifa bin Jassim Al Kuwari said that this emergency contribution agreement comes at a critical time not just to support the UNRWA funding shortfall but to strengthen its pivotal role in protecting the rights of Palestine refugees at risk, in addition to alleviating their urgent and critical needs, Palestine refugees remain at the top of the state of Qatars agenda, especially given the refugees ever-growing humanitarian, health, and educational needs, adding that QFFD hopes to improve the lives of numerous underserved communities in Palestine and change their lives for the better.
This emergency contribution is a response to an urgent call that UNRWA raised to support the pressing needs and ramp up funding for the Agency amid an increased dependence of Palestine refugees on aid. This contribution is a supplementary end-of-year funding from QFFD to the Agency.
“Once again, Qatar sends a strong message of support to Palestine refugees” said Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA Commissioner General. “In the aftermath of the World Cup, where solidarity with Palestinians was very prominent” he added, pointing out that this gesture by Qatar in response to an urgent call for support from UNRWA, is the first coming from the region, indicating that he is truly grateful for this generosity as it will go a long way in telling the refugees that they are not alone.

الدوحة: وقع صندوق قطر للتنمية اتفاقية مساهمة طارئة لدعم موارد وكالة الأمم المتحدة لإغاثة وتشغيل لاجئي فلسطين في الشرق الأدنى (الأونروا)، وذلك بهدف سد الاحتياجات المزمنة للاجئين الفلسطينيين ودعم جهود /الأونروا/.
وقال سعادة السيد خليفة بن جاسم الكواري مدير عام صندوق قطر للتنمية إن الاتفاقية تأتي في وقت حرج لدعم نقص التمويل الذي تعاني منه /الأونروا/، ولتعزيز دورها المحوري في حماية حقوق اللاجئين الفلسطينيين المعرضين للخطر، إضافة إلى تخفيف حاجتهم بشكل عاجل وفوري”.
وأضاف “يظل اللاجئون الفلسطينيون على رأس جدول أعمال دولة قطر، سيما بالنظر إلى احتياجاتهم الإنسانية والصحية والتعليمية المتزايدة، ويأمل الصندوق في تحسين حياة العديد من المجتمعات المحرومة في فلسطين وتغييرها للأفضل”.
وأوضح أن الاتفاقية بمثابة استجابة لنداء عاجل أطلقته /الأونروا/ لدعم الحاجة الملحة لزيادة التمويل للوكالة وسط زيادة اعتماد لاجئي فلسطين على هذه المساعدات التي تقدمها الوكالة، كتمويل تكميلي في نهاية العام للوكالة.
قال فيليب لازاريني، المفوض العام لـ /الأونروا/: “ترسل دولة قطر مرة أخرى رسالة دعم قوية إلى لاجئي فلسطين”. وأضاف: كان التضامن مع الفلسطينيين في بطولة كأس العالم FIFA قطر 2022 بارزا للغاية، وجاءت هذه المبادرة من قطر، استجابة لنداء عاجل لدعم /الأونروا/، وهي أول مبادرة مقبلة من المنطقة، نحن ممتنون حقا لهذا الكرم، والذي سيسهم في إخبار اللاجئين أنهم ليسوا وحدهم”.
وتعاني /الأونروا/ من نقص مزمن في التمويل، يهدد قدرتها على دفع رواتب الموظفين، والذي يضيف أعباء كبيرة على اللاجئين الفلسطينيين، الذين يواجهون أسوأ الظروف الاجتماعية والاقتصادية منذ سنوات.
وستعمل هذه الموارد الإضافية على سد فجوة التمويل الحادة التي تعاني منها الوكالة على الفور، وستساهم في السماح باستمرار الخدمات الحيوية للاجئين الفلسطينيين في جميع أنحاء المنطقة.
