Governments around the world have spent $10 trillion on financial measures in the face of the new Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and its economic repercussions, but more needs to be done, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said today.
International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director Kristalina Georgieva said there are new estimates that up to 100 million people could slide into extreme poverty because of the crisis, wiping out the gains of poverty reduction for the last three years.
The World Bank also predicted this week that the Coronavirus will cause global output to shrink by 5.2 percent this year, the deepest contraction since World War II.
On the IMF’s projections pupdates on the 24th of this month, Georgieva suggested that there will be a high probability of further cuts to the IMF’s April projections, which indicated a three percent contraction in world output.
In order to achieve a more comprehensive recovery, significant fiscal stimulus must be focused on reducing job losses and focusing investments on improving the availability of health care and education, strengthening climate protection and expanding the availability of financial and technological products to low-income families and small businesses.

قال صندوق النقد الدولي، اليوم، إن الحكومات في أنحاء العالم أنفقت عشرة تريليونات دولار على الإجراءات المالية المتخذة في مواجهة جائحة فيروس كورنا المستجد (كوفيد-19) وتداعياتها الاقتصادية، لكن ثمة حاجة لمزيد من الجهود الكبيرة.
وأوضحت كريستالينا جورجيفا مديرة صندوق النقد الدولي أن هناك تقديرات جديدة تفيد بأن ما يصل إلى 100 مليون شخص قد ينزلقون إلى الفقر المدقع بسبب الأزمة، مما سيمحو مكاسب تقليص الفقر للأعوام الثلاثة الأخيرة.
وكان البنك الدولي قد توقع بدوره هذا الأسبوع أن يتسبب فيروس كورونا في تقلص الناتج العالمي بنسبة 5.2 بالمئة خلال العام الجاري، وهو ما سيكون أعمق انكماش منذ الحرب العالمية الثانية.
وبشأن التحديثات المقررة لتوقعات صندوق النقد الدولي في الرابع والعشرين من الشهر الجاري، رجحت جورجيفا أن هناك احتمالية كبيرة لإجراء المزيد من التخفيضات على توقعات صندوق النقد الدولي الصادرة في شهر أبريل الماضي والتي أشارت إلى انكماش الناتج العالمي ثلاثة بالمئة.
وأفادت بأنه لتحقيق تعاف أكثر شمولا، لابد أن يكون التحفيز المالي الكبير منصبا على الحد من فقد الوظائف وتركيز الاستثمارات على تحسين توافر الرعاية الصحية والتعليم وتعزيز الحماية المناخية وتوسيع إتاحة المنتجات المالية والتكنولوجية للأسر منخفضة الدخل والشركات الصغيرة.
