Carnegie Mellon students meet president of Rwanda

Students from three of Carnegie Mellon University’s global campuses, including CMU in Qatar, have met with Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame to discuss their passion for education and technology.

The students were participating in Project Rwanda, a community service initiative that brings together CMU students from Qatar, the US and Rwanda.

While in Kigali, Andrew Edward, a junior in the Information Systems Programme on the Qatar campus, sent a tweet to President Kagame to tell him about the team’s enthusiasm for education in Rwanda. To the team’s surprise, the president reached out and invited the group to speak with him.

“Meeting with President Kagame was an incredible moment for Project Rwanda,” said Edward. “When we sent the tweet, we didn’t expect this great response. We really felt he wanted to listen to our ideas and experiences and help in making these ideas impactful for education in Rwanda.”

Project Rwanda aims to enhance the educational experience of Rwandan youth through technology. Each year, a group of Carnegie Mellon students from Qatar and the main campus in Pittsburgh team up with students from the African campus. Together, they work with Rwandan students and teachers to explore ways to teach and learn with technology.

التقى طلاب من جامعة كارنيجي ميلون، بمن فيهم طلاب جامعة كارنيجي ميلون في قطر، برئيس جمهورية رواندا، بول كاغامي، في إطار مشروع رواندا؛ لمناقشة شغفهم بالتعليم والتكنولوجيا، وذلك في إطار «مشروع رواندا»، وهي مبادرة خدمة مجتمعية يقودها الطلاب، وتجمع طلاب جامعة كارنيجي ميلون من حرم بيتسبرغ وقطر ورواندا.

وجاء هذا اللقاء بمبادرة من الطالب أندرو أدوارد، الذي يدرس نظم المعلومات في جامعة كارنيجي ميلون في قطر، الذي أرسل تغريدة إلى الرئيس كاغامي يخبره فيها عن حماس الفريق للتعليم في رواندا. وللمفاجأة، قابل الرئيس الفريق التحية بأحسن منها، ودعا الطلاب للقائه.

وقال أدوارد: «كان اللقاء مع الرئيس كاغامي لحظة رائعة بالنسبة لمشروع رواندا. عندما أرسلنا تغريدتنا لم نتوقع هذه الاستجابة الرائعة، شعرنا حقاً أنه يريد الاستماع إلى أفكارنا وخبراتنا، والمساعدة في أن يكون لهذه الأفكار تأثير على التعليم في رواندا». يهدف مشروع رواندا إلى تعزيز التجربة التعليمية للشباب الرواندي من خلال التكنولوجيا. كل عام، تتعاون مجموعة من طلاب جامعة كارنيجي ميلون من قطر والحرم الرئيسي في بيتسبرغ مع طلاب من الحرم الجامعي الإفريقي.
