Controversy over the spread of a deadly fungal infection that caused the death of Samir Ghanem

Doha: The Central Department of Preventive Medicine affairs at the Egyptian Ministry of Health has resolved the controversy surrounding the spread of the Black Fungus strain in Egypt among coronavirus infected, which is rumored to be behind the death of artist Samir Ghanem.

Egyptian media quoted the brother of the late artist Samir Ghanem as saying that his brother had “Black Fungus” in his eyes, noting that the disease is “one of the worst things that human beings are exposed to”.

Black Fungus is a very rare infection, which has emerged as the deadly second wave of Covid 19 escalates in India, with doctors noticing that it affects Covid-19 patients who are in recovery or who have fully recovered.

But Dr. Mohamed Abdel Fattah, head of the department, said in remarks to Egyptian media that there is no truth to all rumors about the spread of this strain in Egypt, stressing that if any infectious disease or a new strain of coronavirus appears, infections and treatment plans will be revealed and the epidemic will be dealt with.

He stressed that Egypt has a strong epidemic surveillance system that specializes in tracking epidemic diseases and their prevalence rates, and provides quick solutions to the epidemic and is informed on the latest updates regarding science globally.

الدوحة: حسمت الإدارة المركزية لشؤون الطب الوقائي بوزارة الصحة المصرية، الجدل الدائر حول انتشار سلالة الفطر الأسود في مصر بين مصابي فيروس “كورونا”، والتي أشيع أنها وراء وفاة الفنان سمير غانم.

وكانت وسائل إعلام مصرية نقلت عن شقيق الفنان الراحل سمير غانم قوله، إن شقيقه أصيب بمرض “الفطر الأسود” في عينيه، مشيرا إلى أن هذا المرض هو “من أسوأ الأمور التي يتعرض لها الإنسان”.

والفطر الأسود هو عدوى نادرة جدا، ظهرت مع تصاعد الموجة الثانية القاتلة من “كوفيد 19” في الهند، إذ لاحظ الأطباء أنها تصيب مرضى “كوفيد-19” الذين هم في طور التعافي أو الذين تعافوا تماما.

لكن الدكتور محمد عبدالفتاح، رئيس الإدارة قال في تصريحات لوسائل إعلام مصرية، إنه لا صحة لكل ما يتردد بشأن انتشار تلك السلالة في مصر، مشددا على أنه في حال ظهور أي مرض معدٍ أو سلالة جديدة لفيروس “كورونا” سيتم الكشف عن الإصابات وخطط العلاج والتعامل مع الوباء.

وأكد امتلاك مصر نظام ترصد قوي للأوبئة ويختص بتتبع الأمراض الوبائية ومعدلات انتشارها من عدمه، ويقدم حلولا سريعة لمواجهة الوباء ويطلع على جديد العلم عالميا.
