Exhibition at Katara focuses on plight of Palestinian children

On May 15, 2014 during the Naqba Day protests in the West Bank village of Beitunia, Palestinian teenager Nadim Nawara was murdered. He reportedly posed no threat and was unarmed, carrying only his schoolbag where one of the bullets that killed him rested along with his books.

It was Nawara that inspired and to whom artist and fellow Palestinian Nameer Qassim dedicates her new exhibition, which opened at Katara Cultural Village yesterday.

Aptly titled “Suspicion,” the exhibition puts a spotlight on the plight of the Palestinian children whose lives are the ones mostly impacted by the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territories and who are usually targeted during military actions.

Employing conceptual art in her works, Qassim effectively delivers poignant message with the schoolbag as the main recurring element in all the 10 paintings.

Normally a bag, which comes in different shapes and colours, is used by a person to comfortably carry things he or she needs, and what it contains speaks a lot about its owner, she said.

However, for Palestinians the bag turns from a means of comfort into a huge burden because of the checkpoints and barriers imposed by the occupation in which the bag’s owner becomes a suspect.

In particular, the artist uses the schoolbag as school students are prone to become targets than others. The paintings also treat the schoolbag as representation of Palestine in general and the division it is facing, and it represents Jerusalem in particular and the isolation and control it is experiencing.

“Suspicion” is dedicated to Nawara who died still wearing his schoolbag, as well as to Palestinian martyrs, children and minor prisoners.

The exhibition includes a collection of paintings through which the artist sheds light on the challenges facing the Palestinians. Among the paintings in the collection are Rejected, Snipe, Death Game, Indictment, What Remains of the City, and Violation.

Further reinforcing her intended message, the artist paints images of certain objects of significance such as CCTV, tyre, balloons, barbed wire and tank.

Inscribed on one of the paintings on show are 1948 and 1967 which refer to two dark and catastrophic periods in Palestinian history marked by forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes and destruction of villages.

Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, General Manager of Katara and Munir Ghannam, Ambassador of Palestine to Qatar inaugurated the exhibition.

Al Sulaiti lauded the message carried by the exhibition, which he said confirms that the arts are the highest language for advocating peace and expressing just humanitarian issues. He stressed that every exhibition presented by Katara carries a noble humanitarian idea and message.

“We work every time to organize rich exhibitions in terms of their artistic level and also in terms of their content,” he said.

Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti pointed out that Katara had already organized on many occasions exhibitions of Palestinian artists who presented various artistic experiences according to different schools of art.

“We are happy this time to host distinguished Palestinian artist, Nameer Qassim, who presents to us through her paintings a very important topic as she touched on the problems and pressures faced by Palestinians, especially children,” he said.

The exhibition is open for public viewing until January 14 at Gallery 2 of Katara Building 18.

افتتح سعادة الدكتور خالد بن إبراهيم السليطي المدير العام للمؤسسة العامة للحي الثقافي «كتارا»، معرض «اشتباه» للفنانة البصرية الفلسطينية نمير قاسم، في المبنى 18، بحضور سعادة السيد منير غنام السفير الفلسطيني لدى الدولة، وعدد من ممثلي البعثات الدبلوماسية، وكوكبة من الإعلاميين والمهتمين. وأشاد مدير عام «كتارا»، بالرسالة التي يحملها المعرض، والتي تؤكد أن الفنون هي أسمى لغات الدعوة للسلام والتعبير عن القضايا الإنسانية العادلة، وأكد أن كل معرض تقدمه «كتارا» يحمل فكرة ورسالة إنسانية سامية، قائلاً: ونحن نعمل في كل مرة على تنظيم معارض ثرية من حيث مستواها الفني، وأيضاً من حيث ما تحمله من مضامين، وأشار إلى أن المؤسسة العامة للحي الثقافي نظمت في مناسبات كثيرة العديد من المعارض لفنانين فلسطينيين قدَّموا تجارب فنية متنوعة وفقاً لمدارس فنية مختلفة.

وأضاف: نحن سعداء هذه المرة باستضافة الفنانة الفلسطينية المتميزة نمير قاسم، التي قدمت من خلال لوحاتها موضوعاً مهماً، حيث تطرقت لما يتعرض له الفلسطينيون وخاصة الأطفال من مشكلات وضغوطات.

ويضم المعرض مجموعة من اللوحات التي ألقت الفنانة من خلالها الضوء على ما يواجهه الفلسطينيون من تحديات، ومن بين لوحاتها: مرفوض، قنص، ترقب، لعبة الموت، لائحة اتهام، عزلة، ما تبقى من المدينة، انتهاك، واختارت الفنانة الحقيبة كعنصر مشترك بين مختلف أعمالها الفنية، التي اتبعت فيها ما يعرف بأسلوب الفن المفاهيمي، وهو فن لا يعتمد على الجماليات، وإنما على تبليغ المتلقي فكرة أو مضموناً معيناً، وفي تعريفها لموضوع المعرض تقول نمير قاسم: الحقيبة هي وسيلة لنقل حاجياتنا بكل راحة، وهي متعددة الأشكال والألوان، ونأخذها معنا أينما نذهب، وتشاركنا كل اللحظات بكامل تفاصيلها، الحقيبة تشبهنا من حيث المحتوى، الحقيبة تشبه صاحبها. فجأة تتحول الحقيبة من وسيلة راحة إلى عبء كبير على صاحبها الفلسطيني، بسبب نقاط التفتيش والحواجز التي يفرضها عليه الاحتلال، لتلعب دور المشتبه بها، وقالت إنها اختارت الحقيبة لارتباطها خصوصاً بطلاب المدارس، وهم المستهدفون أكثر من غيرهم.

وأضافت: تمثل الحقيبة فلسطين بشكل عام، وما تعيشه من تقسيم، وتمثل القدس بشكل خاص، وما تعيشه من حال عزلة ومراقبة، وما يعيشه سكانها المقدسيون وأولهم الأطفال، من حالة اتهام وتحقيق دائمين، وأوضحت أن «اشتباه» هو إهداء إلى روح الشهيد نديم نوارة، الذي ارتقى وهو لا يزال يرتدي حقيبته المدرسية، وإلى أرواح شهداء فلسطين الأطفال والأسرى القاصرين.

وكانت الفنانة قد أشارت في الكتيب الخاص بالمعرض إلى أن مشروع «اشتباه» محاولة لتصوير واقع المدينة المقدسة وغطرسة كاميرات المراقبة فيها، لرصد التوتر الذي تنشره في سماء المقدسيين وأيامهم، وتقمع ضحكاتهم في الشوارع، وتحاصرهم في دائرة متواصلة من الاتهام.

تجدر الإشارة الى أن المعرض سيتواصل حتى 14 يناير الحالي.
