Traffic accident deaths decrease by 25% in five years

مدير عام المرور يؤكد انخفاض معدل الحوادث بالدولة.. ويطالب سائقي المركبات الالتزام بهذا الأمر

Doha: Secretary-General of the Qatar National Traffic Safety Committee Brigadier Muhammed Abdullah Al Malki has said that the National Strategy for Traffic Safety has achieved a remarkable improvement in the standard of traffic safety in Qatar as the number of traffic accident deaths decreased by 25 percent compared to 2013.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the International Traffic Safety Conference (ITSC), Brigadier Al Malki said in recognition of this success, Qatar has received the international prize for traffic safety for the year 2018.

During the closing ceremony, Brigadier Al Malki announced the recommendations of the conference for strengthening the present traffic safety system in the country to maintain the current results and to carry on continuous work to reduce traffic accident rates to achieve a 50 percent reduction in the number of deaths in 2022 in order to make the Qatar ready to deliver the 2022 World Cup successfully.

The ITSC underlined the importance of developing traffic accident investigations to identify the causes of these accidents and develop effective solutions. It also emphasised the role of scientific research in cooperation with local and international research centres in order to find innovative technological solutions to promote the concepts of traffic safety.

Enhancing cooperation with the United Nations and joining in the traffic safety related agreements, strengthening the role of intelligent transport systems, not only in solving traffic congestion problems, but also in improving traffic safety and reducing some irregularities or misconduct of road users and emphasising on the importance of establishing a precise database for traffic and traffic accidents in line with the best international practices so that they are available for all, were other recommendations of the conference.

On the second day of the conference, in the session on traffic safety, Colonel Mohammad Radhi Al Hajri, Director of Traffic Awareness Department presented a paper on ‘Wrong behaviors and their relationship to road traffic crashes’.

He explained through that the existence of a close relationship between the wrong behaviors and the high rate of traffic accidents. Al Hajri pointed out that there are misconduct of the drivers (non-compliance with the specified speed, overtaking from the right, using mobile while driving, not leaving enough safety distance).

Chinese Prof. Shengchuan Zhao, Dean of the College of Engineering, Dalian University of Technology presented the a paper on ‘The Value of Statistical Life in Road Safety in China’.

Other presenters of the session were Prof. Meng Li from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China; Prof. Tom Brijs, Transportation Research Institute of Hasselt University, Belgium and Dr. Wael Alhajyaseen, Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Center. They presented papers on ‘Development of Urban Traffic Management for Chinese Metropolis’, ‘Road Safety in Flanders (Belgium): Successful Experiences and Lessons Learned from Two Decades of Traffic Safety Research’ and ‘Variable Message Sign Strategies to Accommodate the Heterogeneous Driving Population’ respectively.

أكد اللواء محمد سعد الخرجي، مدير عام المرور، النائب الثاني لرئيس اللجنة الوطنية للسلامة المرورية، استمرار انخفاض معدل الحوادث المرورية في الدولة، متوقعا أن تكون الإحصاءات المرورية للعام الجاري مبشرة “لاسيما ما يتعلق بحالات الوفاة الناجمة عن هذه الحوادث”.

وقال اللواء الخرجي، في تصريح للصحفيين على هامش مؤتمر السلامة المرورية الذي اختتم اليوم، إن الانخفاض المستمر لأعداد الوفيات والإصابات الناجمة عن حوادث الطرق في الدولة، يعكس نجاح الخطط والاستراتيجيات ذات الصلة بالشأن المروري.

وتوقع أن تشهد السنوات المقبلة مزيدا من النتائج الإيجابية لاسيما في ضوء التنفيذ المتقن لمشاريع النقل العام، ومعابر المشاة، وغيرها من المشاريع المرتبطة باستراتيجية السلامة المرورية في مرحلتها الثانية 2017-2022.

وأوضح أن تنفيذ المشاريع المرتبطة بالاستراتيجية سيحد من الحوادث المرورية بشكل كبير.. مضيفا “نتوقع أن تساهم معابر المشاة التي سيتم إنجازها، على سبيل المثال، في خفض نسبة وفيات الحوادث المرورية بمعدل قد يصل إلى 30 بالمائة”.

وأشار إلى أن تراجع حالات الوفاة جراء الحوادث المرورية خلال السنوات الماضية (سجلت 5.4 حالة لكل مائة ألف نسمة العام 2017 ) جاء نتيجة ارتفاع الوعي المجتمعي بالسلامة المرورية، وزيادة الرادارات الثابتة والمتحركة في طرقات الدولة، وانتشار الدوريات المرورية المزودة بالرادارات التي تلتقط السيارات المسرعة في الاتجاهين، إلى جانب الاستجابة السريعة لسيارات الإسعاف وتقديم الخدمات الطبية للمصابين.

ولفت مدير عام المرور إلى أن “المؤشرات المرورية للعام 2018 تدعو إلى التفاؤل، حتى الآن، ونرجو أن تظل كما هي عليه خلال ما تبقى من هذا العام” ، داعيا سائقي المركبات لأخذ الحيطة والحذر خلال هذه الفترة التي تشهد موسم التخييم وسقوط أمطار الخير.
